A Wild Rice Primer

Volume 36, Issue 4, Page
Summary

Wild rice has too often been ignored as an important wetland plant. Nearly extirpated throughout much
of its original range, many modern-day wetland managers have little idea that wild rice even existed
within their local areas. Even in areas where it is still found, it is considered a plant of rivers and lakes
rather than typical wetlands. While wild rice is more commonly found in riverine and lacustrine systems,
it can provide ecological benefits in smaller palustrine wetlands.
