An ELI Public Webinar

Local hazard mitigation planning can create opportunities for communities to identify overlapping priorities between conservation and hazard mitigation, broaden the range of available solutions to include strategies with conservation co-benefits, and build a more inclusive planning process. Special districts—such as conservation districts, flood control districts, and soil and water conservation districts—benefit from participating in these planning processes.

This webinar will detail how special districts can be more engaged in hazard mitigation planning. An expert panel will provide an overview of the hazard mitigation planning process and discuss the cascading benefits of special district participation. They will highlight case studies and practical examples of nature-based hazard mitigation projects that align conservation and risk reduction priorities, along with creative funding strategies that have emerged from integrated planning partnerships.

Panelists:
Rebecca Kihslinger, Senior Science and Policy Analyst; Director, Wetlands Program, Environmental Law Institute Moderator
Matthew West, Mitigation Planning Supervisor, Colorado Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management; Local Hazard Mitigation Planning and Integrating Special Districts
