An ELI Public Webinar

Americans living along the U.S. coast face growing risks of flooding from more severe storms and rising seas. Unfortunately, many people have limited information about coastal flood risk. Without high quality flood risk information, people are not able to make fully informed investment decisions, are less likely to take steps to reduce flood risks to their property, and are less likely to support government measures to reduce flood risks and costs.

Join the Environmental Law institute for a moderated panel of experts in the coastal flood risk field, including presentations on key topics and a discussion of potential steps that federal agencies and others might take to strengthen flood risk information and better communicate this information to coastal residents. Our speakers will discuss questions such as:

  • Are improvements to state laws the best way to strengthen flood risk disclosure at time of sale, or should there be a national-level disclosure requirement?
  • What steps is the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) taking to improve flood risk communication, and how might tools such as the National Risk Index be improved?
  • What role should the private sector play in supporting better flood risk assessment and communication?
  • Should the federal government rely on coastal residents to find flood risk information, or should some residents (e.g., people in high-risk areas and low-income communities) be directly informed of flood risk?

Speakers:
Jeff Peterson, Visiting Scholar, Environmental Law Institute; author of A New Coast: Strategies for Responding to Devastating Storms and Rising Seas, Moderator
Helena Cawley, General Counsel, First Street Foundation
Joel Scata, Senior Attorney, Environmental Health, Natural Resources Defense Council
Heidi Stiller, South Regional Director, Office for Coastal Management, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
