An ELI Public Webinar

Cacao beans have been a culturally significant food source for millennia; today, chocolate is one of the most popular candies across the world. Market data shows that in 2024, the chocolate confectionary market generated over $130 billion in revenue globally. However, chocolate production often raises a number of questions about sustainability and human rights.

Join the Environmental Law Institute and expert panelists for an Earth Day panel discussion surrounding chocolate, its environmental impacts, and the current laws and policies regulating its sale in the United States. How is chocolate produced, and how might climate change affect this? How sustainable is chocolate right now, and what opportunities exist to lessen its environmental impacts? What are the labeling and marketing regulations surrounding chocolate sold in the U.S.? We will discuss these questions and many more.

Speakers:
Linda Breggin, Senior Attorney; Director, Center for State and Local Governance, Environmental Law Institute, Moderator
Terry Collingsworth, Founder and Executive Director, International Rights Advocates
Carla Martin, Founder and Executive Director, Fine Cacao and Chocolate Institute
