Wetlands Course for Beginners and Experts

April 2000

ALI-ABA, the Environmental Law Institute®, and the ABA Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources have joined forces to update wetlands practitioners and other professionals on the continuously evolving area of wetlands law and regulation. The annual course of study Wetlands Law and Regulation will be held June 1-2, 2000, in Washington, DC.

The course will update experienced attorneys and wetlands professionals on recent developments, including the areas of wetlands mitigation, federal interpretations of the Commerce Clause, permitting, and regulatory programs. Expert panels with key policymakers and senior practicing attorneys will address recent regulatory changes and case decisions affecting the federal Clean Water Act’s section 404 program and other federal and state laws. Special attention will be given to the newly revised nationwide permits. In addition, a special panel will highlight the regional law and policy issues and developments in several key U.S. regions.

The course doesn’t just cater to the seasoned attorney specializing in wetlands law. To prepare the less experienced practitioner for this course, an optional introductory lecture and wetlands field trip on May 31 will present the basics of wetlands law, delineation, and mitigation practice. There is no additional charge for this lecture and field trip, but space is limited.

Keynote speakers include David Hayes (Deputy Secretary, U.S. Department of the Interior) and Joy B. Zedler, Ph.D. (Aldo Leopold Chair of Restoration Ecology at University of Wisconsin-Madison). Co-Chairs Virginia S. Albrecht (Hunton & Williams), Margaret N. Strand (Oppenheimer Wolff Donnelly & Bayh LLP), and John H. Turner (Vice President of Publications, ELI) have organized a first-rate faculty of leading government officials, environmental advocates, private practitioners, and technical consultants. Among the course faulty are Derb S. Carter Jr. (Southern Environmental Law Center), Letitia J. Grishaw (U.S. Department of Justice), Brenda Mallory (Beveridge & Diamond P.C.), John Studt (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers), and Edgar B. Washburn (Washburn, Briscoe & McCarthy P.C.).

Tuition for the course is $695, or $645 for ELI Associates and members of the ABA Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources, and includes admission to all course sessions, study materials, daily Continental breakfast, and a reception. Tuition assistance is available.
