Summary

The 1993 Midwest floods resulted in record economic loss throughout a significant portion of the Missouri and upper Mississippi basins. Total monetary loss estimates range from $12 to $16 billion, and the federal government alone has spent more than $6 billion on flood response and recovery operations. These enormous losses were incurred in spite of over a century of federal spending on levees and reservoirs to tame these rivers and control flooding.
