Updated for 2018, the second edition of Environmental Protection in the Trump Era is the latest collaboration between the Environmental Law Institute and the American Bar Association’s Civil Rights and Social Justice Section. With updates to every chapter, the book covers critical changes to the environmental protection landscape under the Trump Administration since January 20, 2017. The publication is written for the interested public, not just attorneys, and is rooted in changes to laws, regulations, or agency practices.

To support the public discussion, the book is free to download. Individual chapters are also available for download:

We welcome donations in support of further work on this project.

The prior edition (Sept. 2017) is still available for download as a pdf or epub

Praise for the 1st Edition:

“As an environmental justice and civil rights lawyer who works with communities of color and low-income communities who have been historically excluded from environmental decisionmaking, the simple question of “What’s happening?” has become increasingly more difficult to answer under the Trump Administration. That’s why I was thrilled by the release of Environmental Protection in the Trump Era. The book sifts through all of the chaos and identifies what’s really going on.”

—Jeremy Orr, Esq., State Chairperson for Environmental & Climate Justice, Michigan State Conference NAACP

"Environmental Protection in the Trump Era is essential reading for understanding the many changes to federal environmental law and policy. The pace of regulatory change and different approaches to enforcement by the Trump Administration requires the focused attention of environmental lawyers, professors, and law students. This publication from the Environmental Law Institute & American Bar Association's Section of Civil Rights and Social Justice cuts through the noise and provides the relevant information. Read it, download it, bookmark it, and check back regularly for updates!"

— Nicholas J. Schroeck, Director, Transnational Environmental Law Clinic, Wayne State University Law School

“ELI’s Environmental Protection in the Trump Era puts an overwhelming amount of legislative and executive branch activity into perspective and context. It serves as an enormously helpful, insightful and comprehensive resource at a tumultuous time in American politics and environmental law.”

—Stacey J. Sublett, Associate, Beveridge & Diamond
