The City of Richmond embarked on a brownfields pilot project in the North Shoreline Area in 1996. The ultimate goal of the North Shoreline Pilot project is to stimulate economic development and improve public health and environmental quality. Specific goals for this area are to facilitate cleanup and development of several industrial properties within the 900-acre North Shoreline Area; reduce the adjacent residents' exposures to contamination; protect natural resources; educate local residents about the identification of contaminated sites and remediation alternatives; and provide a model for similar undertakings elsewhere in Richmond and in other cities.
