Join the Environmental Law Institute and the Pro Bono Clearinghouse for the 12th part of our continuing legal education series: Community Lawyering for Environmental Justice.

This installment will focus on the environmental justice implications of heirs' property. This part of property law, in which property is passed down without a will to multiple heirs, often leads to problems with establishing clear title. For marginalized communities, the lack of clear title has led to losses in land ownership, which has historically affected Black American landholders in the South since the end of the Civil War. The problem persists today, with heirs' property issues impacting not just Black American landowners, but also communities in Appalachia, Latinx American communities in the Southwest, and Indigenous communities on reservations. This panel of experts will highlight these issues and provide insights for attorneys to understand and utilize the nexus between property law and environmental justice.
