The Research and Policy Division works with local and regional partners, in the United States and worldwide, to strengthen environmental laws, to develop new theories and practical approaches to ensure their effectiveness, and to improve the capacity of citizens and governments to use the law to protect the environment.

Freshwater & Oceans

Improving the quality, sustainability, and use of water resources by developing integrated and responsive water supply and protection systems.

Land & Biodiversity

Promoting sustainable land use to meet human needs and protect the diversity of plants, animals, and natural communities.

Environmental Governance

Developing integrated and innovative decisionmaking and governance approaches to new or entrenched environmental problems and changing technologies and economies.

International Programs

Improving framework laws and provide training, tools and support to citizens’ organizations, government officials, business environmental managers, communities, and indigenous peoples, working with partners in Africa, India, Latin America, and the Middle East, to secure the benefits of sustainable development.

Climate & Energy

Seeking to enhance the resilience of communities and ecosystems around the world in the face of climate change, as well as find innovative ways to encourage mitigation of climate change and ways to support environmentally-friendly development of alternative energy resources.

Environmental Health

Working to build the capacity of communities and policymakers at all levels of government to ensure healthy natural and built environments.
