The Research and Policy Division works with local and regional partners, in the United States and worldwide, to strengthen environmental laws, to develop new theories and practical approaches to ensure their effectiveness, and to improve the capacity of citizens and governments to use the law to protect the environment.
Improving the quality, sustainability, and use of water resources by developing integrated and responsive water supply and protection systems.
Promoting sustainable land use to meet human needs and protect the diversity of plants, animals, and natural communities.
Developing integrated and innovative decisionmaking and governance approaches to new or entrenched environmental problems and changing technologies and economies.
Improving framework laws and provide training, tools and support to citizens’ organizations, government officials, business environmental managers, communities, and indigenous peoples, working with partners in Africa, India, Latin America, and the Middle East, to secure the benefits of sustainable development.
Seeking to enhance the resilience of communities and ecosystems around the world in the face of climate change, as well as find innovative ways to encourage mitigation of climate change and ways to support environmentally-friendly development of alternative energy resources.
Working to build the capacity of communities and policymakers at all levels of government to ensure healthy natural and built environments.
ELI’s Indoor Environments and Green Buildings Program, Community Health and Environmental Justice Program, and Brownfields Program all work to improve environmental health by engaging a broad range of stakeholders to address varied goals such as
institutionalizing best practices for creating and maintaining buildings and encouraging
cleanup and redevelopment of underused or abandoned land that may be contaminated.
