Bali Ho! Moving Forward in International Climate Negotiation

On December 15, the Bali conference of the parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) reached agreement on a roadmap for negotiations towards a new climate change agreement. The agreement will supersede the Kyoto Protocol, which ends in 2012, and will hopefully include the meaningful participation of the United States and major developing nations. Thus, the future of international agreements on climate change likely hinge on the success of these negotiations through 2009.

Our illustrious panel discussed:

  • What happened at Bali;
  • What is the roadmap for future negotiations both within the UNFCC and in other international venues; and
  • What are the likely effects international negotiations will have on domestic climate law and policy.

Moderator:
Russ LaMotte
, Of Counsel, Beveridge & Diamond P.C.

Panelists:
Sue Biniaz
, Deputy Legal Advisor, Department of State
David Hayes, Partner, Latham & Watkins LLP
David Doniger, Policy Director, Climate Center, Natural Resource Defense Council
Nigel Purvis, Senior Fellow, U.N. Foundation and Climate Policy Center
