Approaches to Clean Water Communication: Slide Decks

Water Quality Programs Generally

Arkansas: DEQ has created presentations to explain the water quality program generally and how citizens can get involved.

Iowa: DNR has slides to explain a variety of program concepts, including TMDLs, prioritization, and the Vision.


TMDLs and Other Restoration Efforts

Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa: Using Alum Treatment and Watershed Management to Improve Water Quality in a Small Lake on the Fond du Lac Reservation describes a specific, 319-funded restoration project.

Indiana: IDEM TMDL 101 explains the Indiana TMDL program, the TMDL process, and the TMDL document.

Kansas: TMDL: Republic River Hardy, Nebraska to Clay Center provides an overview of a TMDL, the goals it is intended to achieve, and its implementation.

Maryland: Total Maximum Daily Loads: An Introductory Briefing explains TMDLs, their role within the Clean Water Act and the TMDL process. Maryland’s CWA Section 303(d) Program Plans for 2016-2022 provides a brief overview of the TMDL and related programs in Maryland and discusses plans (including related to the Vision goals) for the upcoming years.

Minnesota: Bringing a clearer view to the Minnesota River discusses the history and degradation of the Minnesota River Basin as well as restoration efforts currently underway.

Pennsylvania: Fishing Creek Alternative Restoration Plan briefly explains alternative restoration plans and explains the one developed for Fishing Creek.

West Virginia: Presentations are developed for public meetings regarding specific TMDLS; examples include the Elk Watershed TMDLs and the Tygart Valley Watershed TMDL Status Update.

Wisconsin: Presentations are posted online for each TMDL project. Examples include the Wisconsin River Basin TMDL presentation.


Assessment/Listing/the IR

Arkansas: Arkansas’ 303(d) List explains designated uses, standards, and the CWA 303(d) List and 305(b) Report. DEQ also develops presentations providing overviews of the water quality of specific waters and watersheds. Examples include the Mulberry River and Beaver Lake Watershed. A webpage hosts these presentations and others on a variety of topics.

Colorado: Colorado Surface Water Quality Assessment provides background on the CWA 303(d) List, Colorado's Monitoring and Evaluation List, rulemaking, and related processes such as stakeholder engagement. 2018 Integrated Water Quality Monitoring and Assessment Report provides background on the IR, ATTAINS, and IR categories before summarizing key points from the 2018 IR.

North Carolina: DEQ used a presentation to explain the 2018 IR methodology to the state Environmental Management Commission.

Rhode Island: Rhode Island’s Integrated Reporting Process and Draft 2016 303(d) List explains the requirements of the Clean Water Act, the assessment process, the 303(d) List, and ongoing water quality restoration activities.


Prioritization/the Vision

Maryland: Maryland’s Priority Listings 2016–2022 explains the prioritization process and MDE’s priorities through 2022. Tier II Waters Protection and EPA’s New Vision describes the state’s Tier II Waters classification and the efforts undertaken to protect waters so classified.

Massachusetts: DEP developed several presentations regarding different aspects of the visioning process and prioritization. Setting the Stage for Creating 10-Year Vision for Watershed Planning in Massachusetts, which accompanied a Vision workshop, discusses the history of water quality efforts in the state, the monitoring and assessment processes, and challenges and opportunities related to the Vision. Strategy for Prioritizing Surface Waters for Protection and Restoration, which also accompanied a Vision workshop, provides an overview of CWA programs, water quality issues in the state, the need for prioritization, and challenges and opportunities related to prioritization. Prioritizing: Protection & Restoration of our state waters conveys the results of stakeholder engagement regarding prioritization, distinguishing between priorities for protection and restoration.



Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa: Lake-Specific Nutrient Standards and ATTAINS explains the development of the lake-specific nutrient criteria and related assessments.

Puerto Rico: Enmiendas al Reglamento de Estándares de Calidad de Agua (Amendments to the Water Quality Standards Regulations) discusses the process for amending standards and a set of specific proposed amendments.

Arkansas: DEQ has a presentation for explaining the CWA 303(d) List and agriculture.


Volunteer Monitoring

Maine: Maine Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program: Keeping a watchful eye on the health of Maine lakes since 1971 discusses the history of the VLMP, how VLMP collaborates with state agencies, what its data is used for, and how citizens can get involved.
