Meeting the Injurious Wildlife Challenge: Legislative, Regulatory, and Voluntary Approaches

When
May 20, 2014 12:00 pm — 2:00 pm

Asian carp, Burmese pythons, zebra mussels, and other injurious animals cause billions of dollars of harm each year to the economy, environment, and human health. The US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) prohibits importation and interstate transport of “injurious species” listed under the Lacey Act, but few species are listed in part due to the time-consuming and costly listing process.

This briefing brought together a panel of regulatory, industry, and environmental experts to discuss ongoing and proposed strategies for improving and streamlining injurious species regulation through legislative, regulatory, and voluntary action.

PANELISTS:

  • David Hoskins, Assistant Director For Fish and Aquatic Conservation, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
  • Bentley Johnson, Legislative Representative, Public Lands Campaign, National Wildlife Federation
  • Marshall Meyers, Senior Advisor, Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council
  • Jordan Diamond (moderator), Staff Attorney, Environmental Law Institute
