Environmental Assessment and Conflict-Affected Areas: Before, During and After

In June 2007, ELI participated in a special Theme Forum on “Environmental Assessment and Conflict-Affected Areas: Before, During and After” at the 27th Annual Conference of the International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA) in Seoul, Korea. The forum addressed the role of environmental assessment throughout the stages of armed conflict, and included participants from Asia, Europe, Africa, and North America. ELI’s presentation addressed the interaction of conflict and environment, the role of environmental assessment in armed conflict, the work of UNEP’s Post-Conflict and Disaster Management Branch, and how natural resource management can facilitate a transition to peace in post-conflict countries such as Liberia, Afghanistan, and Nepal.
