On May 12-13, 2009, ELI and GIF, with support from CGP, convened the first international symposium. The symposium, entitled “Strengthening Post-Conflict Security and Diplomacy: Lessons Learned in Integrating Natural Resources, Infrastructure, and Peacebuilding,� was held in New York at the Earth Institute of Columbia University, in partnership with the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN). Thirty-four researchers and practitioners from a wide range of institutions and disciplines came together to explore and learn from past post-conflict experiences. The symposium highlighted and contrasted specific experiences, examined lessons learned, and identified next steps in strengthening post-conflict peacebuilding and diplomacy.
