Summary: This law requires those who provide cleaning products or services to schools to provide and use only environmentally preferable cleaning products.
Key Provisions:
- Requirements for Providing Green Cleaning Products and Services. The law provides that distributors or manufacturers of cleaning products may only sell or distribute environmentally preferable cleaning products to schools. The law also requires anyone who contracts with a school to provide cleaning services to use only environmentally preferable cleaning products. The law includes air fresheners, but excludes anti-microbial pesticides.
- Guidelines and Specifications. The law defines environmentally preferable cleaning products as those used by the state department of buildings and general services (under state contracts) or those certified by an independent third party. The law defines independent third party to mean a nationally recognized organization that has developed a certification program that meets several criteria listed in the law or that is otherwise approved by the state department of health.
- Training. The law requires a distributor or manufacturer of cleaning products to provide a green cleaning training to each school district it provides with environmentally preferable cleaning products, at no cost to the district.
